Historic renovation and adaptive reuse to senior apartments.
Formerly the D.A. Holmes School, D.A. Holmes Senior Apartments was originally constructed in 1904. The school was significantly enlarged in 1924 with the addition of a classroom wing and a gymnasium/auditorium wing. The building continued to function as a public school until the last 1980's. The building sat vacant for over 15 years, falling into a state of disrepair, until construction was commenced in 2004.
From 2001-2003, SWD Architects developed an independent living senior apartment design that would adaptively reuse the school and historically renovate it at the same time. Original classrooms and offices were redesigned into 46 new aprtments. The original auditorium stage and seating area was preserved and converted to a community space for the residents.
By maintaining the original wide corridors, historic wood trim, classroom doors and transoms, these areas serve to provide inviting impromptu gathering spaces for the senior residents. Incorporated outdoor communal spaces was also an integral part of the overall design of D.A. Holmes Senior Apartments.
