Historic renovation and adaptive reuse of the historic Pilgrim building and infill of the Englehart-Winning Facade
The Fourth Street Lofts consist of two separate buildings that were combined into one project. The buildings are the Pilgim Building which was intact and the historic facade of the Englehart-Winning Building. The remainder of the Englehart-Winning Building had been damaged by fire and demolished in the past with only the Fourth Street façade remaining. Four new floors, the roof and west elevation were originally constructed as part of the infill of the original Englehart-Winning Building. Twenty four new loft style apartments were constructed in the buildings with the two buildings being connected with bridges across a common four story tall atrium.
These buildings were constructed in the late 1800's in the garment district of St. Joseph. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Wholesale Row Historic District, the buildings are situated in one of the few entire blocks of vintage Victorian warehouse buildings still standing in Missouri. In fact, the district is said to be the only intact architectural example of its kind left in the country.
The completed historic renovation provided 24 apartment units and a four story open atrium connecting the two buildings.
