Historic renovation and adaptive reuse to senior apartments.
The Greystone Place apartments are an historic renovation and adaptive reuse of the original Neosho High School. Originally constructed in 1917, the school was designed with elements of Neo-Classical and Gothic Revival styles. After a new high school was built by the city of Neosho, the original building sat primarily vacant with occasional transient workers using it as housing. During this period, the building fell into a general state of disrepair.
In 2002, SWD Architects developed a senior apartments design that would adaptively reuse the school and historically renovate it at the same time. Original classrooms and offices were converted to new apartments. The original auditorium stage area was preserved and converted to a community space for the tenants. The original gymnasium was partially converted to apartments by adding a second floor with the remainder of the area being additional community space.
By maintaining the original corridors and historic wood trim and classroom doors and transoms, these areas also provide inviting impromptu gathering spaces for the senior residents.
