Mark Twain Apartments
200 South Main Street
Hannibal, Missouri
Historic renovation and adaptive reuse
The Mark Twain Apartments is an historic renovation and adaptive reuse of the original Mark Twain Hotel. The hotel was constructed in 1905 with a later addition in 1918 to replace the Park Hotel as Hannibal's premiere hotel.
The hotel is prominently located at 200 S. Main St. in downtown Hannibal and was known as the most elegant first-class hotel between St. Louis and Iowa. The hotel's guest list included many notable individuals from the first half of the 20th century, including Teddy Roosevelt, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover, Harry Truman, and Amelia Earhart.
By 1984, after several floods due to its close proximity to the Mississippi River, small interior fires, and numerous interior modifications, the hotel had lost its original grandeur and had fallen into a state of disrepair and decay. In 2005, SWD Architects began to formulate a design to adapt the hotel into 34 senior housing apartments. The project provided a much needed anchor to the south end of the city and has sparked further redevelopment in the area. This project also preserved and restored a historic landmark while providing quality senior housing in a downtown setting.
