Travelers Hotel Apartments
301 W Washington St
Kirksville, Missouri
Historic renovation and adaptive reuse to residential apartments
The Travelers Hotel was built in 1923. It was Kirksville’s first luxury hotel and is located at 301 W Washington Street in the heart of the business district. At the time it was built, the hotel had all of the modern conveniences of its day as well as luxury features that included private baths in many of the rooms and an elevator. Being located next to the Wabash Railroad initially made a significant contribution to the success of the Travelers Hotel, but as passenger rail travel declined, so did the activity at the hotel.
The existing structure was converted into 20 one-bedroom units with one bath and 14 two-bedroom units with one or two baths. Each unit has central heating and air conditioning, dishwasher, garbage disposal, stove/oven, refrigerator, microwave, carpeting, ceiling fans, and miniblinds. There are 43 parking spaces for resident use, a particularly significant amenity for a "downtown" development, as many such developments must rely heavily on off-street parking. The area surrounding the community provides the residents with retail shopping, grocery shopping, restaurants, schools, and parks while simultaneously providing an urban flavor.
